Dozens of new emoticons representing people with disabilities have been approved for use and warmly welcomed by organizations fighting for equal rights for people with disabilities. Apple offers emoticons, of which only some are: an ear with a hearing aid, a person in a wheelchair, a prosthetic arm, a guide dog and a person with a walking stick. Apple in an official statement wrote: "Currently, emoji provides a wide range of options, but it does not represent the experiences of people with disabilities ", and also: "The diversification of available options helps to fill a significant gap and provides a more comprehensive experience for all "- commented. Apple regularly consults with organizations for people with disabilities such as the American Council of the Blind, the Crewbral Palsy Foundation and the National Associationof the Deaf.
According to the company, the chosen options mostly suit people in these main categories of disability: the blind and visually impairment, deafness and hearing impairment and mobility impairent. However, Apple stresses that this is only a starting point, not an exhaustive and final list of all existing problems. Expanding the new official emoticon list in 2019 means that many smartphones will be able to use them in the second half of this year. Frequent social exclusion and the permanent lack of representation of people with disabilities results in a lack of awareness, which is why Apple's decision makes us even happier because it is definitely a step in the right direction.
