What do you think when you hear the word ballet? How do you imagine that? It is almost certain what kind of pictures appear in your head now. The bodies of beautiful, slender, athletic dancers who perform acrobatics learned over the years during deadly training. You are right. This is what traditional ballet looks like, but not the one that we want to tell you about today. Infinity Dance Theater from New York is a kind of a very non-traditional dance school in which dancers are disabled people, often wheelchair users. They create beautiful, incredibly difficult and demanding choreographies that are extremely popular. They dance classical ballet combined with elements of jazz. The company was founded in 1995 by Kitty Lunn after she suffered a serious accident during which she broke her back.

The diagnosis was unambiguous. Kitty found out that she will probably have to move around in her wheelchair for the rest of her life. Before the accident, she was a young, promising, talented dancer who was just beginning her rehearsals for her first Broadway performance. The accident did not change the fact that she still loved dancing and could not imagine life without it.After three years spent in the hospital, many hours of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, Kitty was ready to go to her first dance class in a wheelchair. She was afraid, not only of her own physical limitations, but also of people's reactions and whether she would be accepted by them. Unfortunately, her fears were confirmed and it turned out that it is not easy to convince anyone that a disabled person is able to dance on a par with those without disabilities.

Kitty did not intend to give up, appeared the idea to open her own company and develop an original dance style specially adapted for people with disabilities. Her students are often young, shy and completely insecure people who try to express themselves and their feelings through dance. Kitty shows them how to accept their physicality, teaches and proves to them that despite the limitations of their bodies hey are able to be happy and fulfilled. Dance liberates freedom in them, changes the way of thinking and is a kind of therapy that brings amazing results.
